Mobile application for bank card users
The basis of the project was to enable interoperation of the co-payment participants’ smartphones over Bluetooth LE protocol. The payments are transferred by means of REST API which was provided by the organizer of the hackathon.
Task
Each year Citi holds the Citi Mobile Challenge hackathon in which contestants are challenged to develop innovative mobile applications for their online banking platforms. Citi selects the best solutions and implements them into the business. IT companies and start-ups from around the world take part in the hackathon. In 2015 First Line Software team participated in the fest and developed an application which allows individuals to split the charge for a restaurant dining check.
Solution
The basis of the project was to enable interoperation of the co-payment participants’ smartphones over Bluetooth LE protocol. The payments are transferred by means of REST API which was provided by the organizer of the hackathon.
Use of the app is intended for consumer bank card users. One of the co-payers creates a cyber account and enters the total sum. Other participants join the account by means of their smartphones and confirm their specific payment amount. The money is transferred from each co-payer’s card to the account of the payment initiator. It is assumed that the sum will be shared equally by all participants; however it is possible to change the split by agreement of the parties.
The most challenging part of this project was the design and implementation of the protocol for exchange of payment information within close range over Bluetooth LE protocol. The mobile app displays all cyber accounts created nearby and the co-payers need to select the correct account. The device of the payment initiator functions as a server (Peripheral), and devices of other participants represent clients (Central). The device interoperation process is not dependent on the specific operating system used in this solution and can easily be extended to other systems in the future.
Result
The application developed by First Line Software was among several that made it to the finals of the Citi Mobile Challenge in the EMEA region.
