Visual recognition mobile app for counting forestry materials
The goal of a timber holding company was to improve accounting and control systems for lumber production by precisely counting their in-stock building materials.
To do this, the Customer decided to automate the counting by using a visual recognition mobile application. They began by researching COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) products but found they lacked the preciseness needed for measurements and could not adjust to environmental conditions typical in a warehouse, such as uneven light and uneven stacks or dust.
The appropriate course of action was to develop a custom application.
First Line Software created a visual recognition algorithm and with it developed a customized mobile app to count sheet materials.
The functionality
- The user points the smartphone camera at the stack of materials
- The application recognizes the plywood in the photo, counts the layers, and informs the user of the result (the number of layers in the stack).
Technology
For the algorithmic part: C ++, algorithms underlying digital photo filters, numerical methods of mathematical analysis, methods of statistics.
For the application: mobile development technology using Android SDK.
The Team
A software developer with strong algorithmic skills supported by the Quality Assurance team and working under the direct supervision of a delivery director.
The Result
This pilot project delivered to our client an effective and cost-saving tool for managing timber products.
