Innovative Database Encryption Solution

A leading software vendor in Southeast Asia specializing in database security and management solutions.

Challenge

The client wanted to bring to the market a brand new versatile database encryption solution targeted at the financial services industry and the public sector. Since available competing products are only compatible with a limited range of leading database products, the new product would be able to reach customers running DBMS software unsupported by the competition. The product would incorporate Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) technology that offers database encryption at column level. The advantages of TDE have to do with the way it solves the problem of protecting data at rest, encrypting databases both on the hard drive and consequently on backup media.

First Line’s solution

The client contacted several software development firms to select the partner for the project. First Line won the contract by demonstrating the best combination of technical skills required to complete this highly challenging assignment in the aggressive timeframe laid out by the client.

The new product eliminates the need to configure multiple enterprise applications that use the protected data, by using the TDE technology and by decrypting and providing the data to the applications on the fly. It is easily configurable via a streamlined web interface. The product gives users (system administrators) the choice of encryption algorithms including both industry standards and more exotic varieties (e.g. OpenSSL, BouncyCastle, and MagicCrypto).

First Line engineers had to solve many complex technical problems in order to achieve desired levels of performance, customize the product for different versions of DMBS software, and implement reliable load balancing functionality.

Results

The client was able to bring a product to the market that surpasses the competition’s functionality, performance and ease of use, while reaching a broader customer base. In addition to the Oracle-based solution, plans for the next phase of the project include the development of the same functionality for other DBMS products (Sybase, DB2 and MS SQL).
