Your Website Isn’t the Whole Digital Experience Anymore

For about as long as there have been digital experiences, the website has been treated as the center of DX. And it makes sense. Websites are where customers would find out about a company, evaluate products, compare options, make purchases, and look for support. So much of digital experience work has focused on making websites faster, easier to navigate, more personalized, and more effective.

But in the age of AI, that model is, not surprisingly, becoming harder to sustain.

Anthropic recently introduced a new commerce-agent blueprint for Claude, with reference implementations that can search product catalogs, understand customer preferences, compare products, build carts, hand customers off to checkout, and answer post-purchase questions. But we shouldn’t just look at the technology itself. It’s more valuable to examine what the technology reveals about where digital experience is heading.


Customers no longer have to navigate a website to complete a journey.

And that raises a bigger question for businesses: What happens to digital experience when the website is no longer the only interface between a customer and the business?

The digital experience is becoming a system

Before we really get into it, it’s important to understand that digital experience has never really been just a website.

Behind the interface we see are content platforms, commerce systems, customer data, APIs, business rules, workflows, and integrations. The website just gives us access to that system.

As new interfaces emerge, the underlying system becomes more important.

A customer might still browse a website. They might use an app. They might interact with a marketplace or another digital channel. Increasingly, they may also interact through an AI-powered interface that interprets their intent and connects them to products, information, or services.

The interface can change, but the underlying experience still has to work.

This is where digital experience becomes less about individual digital projects and more about how the entire experience ecosystem is designed, connected, and able to evolve.

The customer journey doesn’t disappear. It just changes shape.

Consider a conventional commerce journey.

  1. A customer searches for a product.
  2. They browse categories.
  3. They filter results.
  4. They open product pages.
  5. They compare options.
  6. They add something to a cart.
  7. They check out.
  8. Later, they return to the website to track an order or understand a return policy.

An AI-mediated experience can compress many of those steps.

A customer can describe an outcome rather than navigate toward it: “I need a tent, sleeping bag, and stove for a weekend trip with two kids.”

The commerce-agent example from Anthropic is designed to take that kind of request and work across catalog search, product comparison, personalization, cart creation, checkout, and customer care.

Here, it’s important to note that there isn’t simply an AI conversation now.

The journey itself is becoming more dynamic.

That has consequences for how companies think about UX, platforms, content, integrations, and the systems behind them.

UX has to move beyond the screen

Traditional UX starts with interfaces: pages, navigation, components, forms, and interactions.

Those things still matter. But when the interface becomes dynamic, the experience has to be considered at the journey level.

What does the customer actually need to accomplish?

What information does the experience need to support a good decision?

Where should automation help, and where should a person remain in control?

What happens when a customer moves between different interfaces?

And how do you maintain a coherent experience when those interfaces don’t all behave in the same way?

This makes UX strategy more and more connected to the systems underneath it.

A well-designed interface cannot compensate for fragmented customer data, disconnected platforms, unclear business rules, or an architecture that makes change difficult.

The architecture behind the experience matters more

This is where CMS, composable platforms, and integration become increasingly important.

If digital experiences are going to appear across different interfaces, businesses need the underlying capabilities to be accessible, connected, and adaptable.

What that doesn’t necessarily mean is to replace absolutely everything. It means understanding what sits behind the experience and where complexity is preventing the business from changing it effectively.

A modern digital experience may depend on:

  • content and product information
  • customer and account data
  • commerce capabilities
  • APIs and integrations
  • business rules and workflows
  • CMS and composable architecture
  • applications and digital platforms

AI exposes weaknesses that were already there

It would be easy to think of AI agents as another feature that can simply be added to an existing digital experience.

And it’s true that sometimes that may be appropriate. But an AI interface can also expose weaknesses that were already present in the underlying experience.

If product information is inconsistent, an AI system has a harder problem to solve.

If customer data is fragmented, personalization becomes harder.

If the commerce platform and support systems don’t connect, the customer journey remains fragmented, regardless of how sophisticated the interface looks.

If business rules are unclear, introducing automation can increase risk rather than reduce it.

The commerce-agent blueprint itself illustrates this dependency. Its shopping agent relies on integrations with catalog, cart, checkout, customer preferences, and order history.

So the AI layer doesn’t eliminate digital complexity.

It makes that complexity more visible.

This is why the AI conversation shouldn’t start with: “Where can we add AI?”

A better starting point is: “Where is digital complexity preventing us from delivering the experience our customers need?”

AI may eventually become part of the answer, but it isn’t necessarily the starting point.

What should businesses assess now?

The emergence of new AI interfaces doesn’t mean every organization needs to launch an AI agent.

It does mean the assumptions behind the current digital experience are worth examining.

Take these four questions as a starting point:

1. How much of the customer journey depends on navigation?

If customers have to know where to click, which category to choose, or which form to complete before they can express what they actually need, there may be opportunities to simplify the journey.

2. Can your platforms support experiences beyond the website?

Content, commerce capabilities, customer information, and business logic increasingly need to work across multiple touchpoints rather than being tightly coupled to one interface.

3. How connected is the experience underneath the interface?

Look at the systems supporting the journey: CMS, commerce, CRM, APIs, customer data, support systems, and operational workflows.

Where information or processes are disconnected, the customer experience will eventually reflect that fragmentation.

4. How easily can the experience evolve?

The most useful question may not be whether the current experience works, but whether the architecture makes it possible to change the experience when customer behavior and interfaces change again.

Because they most likely will.

The website still matters

None of this means websites are going away. They remain an important part of the digital experience, and for many businesses, they will continue to be a primary customer touchpoint.

The change is that the website needs to be understood as one part of a larger experience system. Its content, functionality, data, and services may need to work alongside applications, commerce platforms, customer systems, partner ecosystems, and emerging AI interfaces.

That changes the role of the website. Instead of being the entire destination, it becomes one interface within a broader ecosystem of experiences.

The strategic question therefore shifts from: How do we build a better website?

to: How do we build a digital experience that can adapt as the interfaces customers use continue to change?

This is a DX problem, not simply an AI problem

The arrival of AI-mediated experiences can make the shift feel new, but the underlying challenge isn’t.

Digital businesses have been dealing with fragmented platforms, disconnected systems, inconsistent experiences, and growing technical complexity for years. What’s changing now is the number and nature of the interfaces that sit on top of those systems.

That’s why the response shouldn’t be another isolated digital project. It should start with the experience itself: understand the customer journey, identify where complexity gets in the way, examine the platforms and integrations supporting it, and then determine which technologies can improve the outcome.

For some organizations, that may eventually include AI-powered experiences.

For others, the priority may be simplifying the journey, modernizing a CMS, connecting systems, or creating a more adaptable digital platform.

The technology follows the experience strategy.

The next phase of digital experience is about adaptability

The businesses best positioned for this shift won’t necessarily be the ones that adopt “the most AI.”

They will most likely be the ones who understand their digital experience as a connected system and can evolve that system without continually rebuilding it from scratch.

That means looking at the customer journey first.

Then understanding the platforms, content, data, integrations, and workflows that support it.

Then deciding where new technologies genuinely improve the experience.
